  1. Reducing Our Environmental Footprint: Scrummi Towels

At Charlie Miller, we strive to do right by our clients, and that includes protecting the environment at the same time. In all 5 salons, we use Scrummi towels – the ultimate sustainable solution to cotton towels.

How has Scrummi helped reduce our environmental footprint?

Since 2011 we have made a dramatic difference. Here’s what we’ve achieved so far:

    • We’ve reduced 500 plus tonnes of CO2
    • We’ve saved 8.3 million litres of chemically contaminated water

    What are Scrummi towels?

Scrummi is a single-use, 100% biodegradable vegan towel that is made from soft and natural wood fibres from sustainable forestry programs. This means it not only protects our environment, but it’s also free of germs and fresh every time!

How do they differ from cotton towels?

No matter how hard you wash a cotton towel (and no matter how much energy you use) germs will remain. They’re invisible to the naked eye, but trust us when we say that lots of fungal and bacterial pathogens are waiting, just below the over-washed scratchy surface, ready to be unleashed onto the next client. But not at Charlie Miller! Scrummi towels are 100% germ and scratch-free. We don’t blame you if you never want to go near a cotton towel again…

    How does this help?

Typical salon towels use literally thousands of kw/h of electricity to wash them after each use. This process equals lots of CO2 which adds to the impact of global warming…but wait, there’s more. An average washing machine load of synthetic towels equals 700,000 micro-plastics and harmful detergents and toxins which have a devastating impact on our oceans.

    Check out the Scrummi timeline:

Scrummi = Happy Customers + Happy Environment

  2. My Client and Me: Linda and Hannah

As Linda and Hannah celebrate a decade of a successful client and stylist partnership. They reflect on why their relationship works and what they love about one another!

    Linda says:

“I discovered Hannah when she took over from my previous colour stylist at Charlie Miller. Although Hannah has been colouring my hair for the last 9 years, I have my hair styled and cut by India.

I’ve been a client at Charlie Miller for about 20 years.  In 1998 I moved from the south of England (where I had been to Molton Brown and Michael John in London,) to Cumbria and until 2010 used to come up from the Lake District every 6 weeks to Charlie Miller for cut and colour.  From 2010 I’ve lived in Edinburgh and Peebles which makes visits much easier!

Hannah’s attention to detail is superb yet she’s always keen to exchange news about what’s happening in her life and mine. Hannah is warm, friendly and very professional. My favourite thing about having my hair done is enjoying the friendly atmosphere and knowing I will leave the salon looking better than when I arrived!”

    Hannah on styling Linda’s Hair:

“I feel I have a lovely relationship with Linda and look forward to her visits. She is stylish, glamorous and elegant. I always love hearing what she has been up to! I have been styling Linda’s hair for 10 years and while we have kept the colour of her hair similar, we’ve changed up the style!”

Appointments with Hannah can be booked online or by calling our Frederick Street salon. We look forward to welcoming you to the salon soon.

John Denholm has been a client of Charlie Miller for more than 4 decades! Having first had his hair cut by our founder Charlie Miller, John’s permanent stylist now is Miriam from our Ocean Terminal salon.

Meet Client, John and Stylist, Miriam!

John on Miriam and why he keeps coming back:

“I have been a client at Charlie Miller for over 40 years now and discovered Miriam when I tried the Ocean Terminal salon upon it’s opening in 2005.

Miriam is friendly and professional. She has consistently given me good results over the years …despite me give her less to work with! Miriam can run a 10k race in less than an hour, proving you can combine artistry with sporting prowess!”

    Miriam says:

“John was one of Charlie’s clients before I started cutting his hair. He is always keen to try new styles whenever I suggest them. John is smart, professional and always has interesting conversations! I always enjoy our chat.”

Appointments with Miriam can be booked online or by calling our Ocean Terminal salon. We look forward to welcoming you to the salon soon.

Lynsey has been Iain’s go-to-stylist at our Frederick Street salon for over 5 years now! Read below their secret to a successful client/stylist relationship.

    Meet Iain and Lynsey

    Iain about Lynsey:

‘I discovered Lynsey by chance by booking into Fredrick Street about five years ago and she gave me such a good cut that she’s been cutting my hair since. My favourite thing about having my hair done at Charlie Miller is knowing that I’ll have a great experience:  great welcome, nice people and a great haircut by the time I leave.

Lynsey has a fantastic, warm personality, is great at her job and we always have a laugh when I’m in. She is professional, bubbly and smart.’

    Lynsey says:

‘Iain is successful, witty and generous and the owner of Arbikie, the company that supplies our gin to the salon. He is super successful in his field and so down to earth. I enjoy his visit every 5 weeks as we have a good giggle and cover a lot of topics one being his gin – which I love!’

Lynsey on being Iain’s Stylist :‘I first cut Iain’s hair about 5 years ago. We have since built up a mutual understanding of each other’s sense of humour and the time has flown by. Iain’s cut had changed over the years from a classic gent to more short and tailored. Sometimes his parting will change but that’s not normally his choice, it occurs with too much blethering.’

Appointments with Lynsey can be booked online or by calling our Frederick Street salon. We look forward to welcoming you to the salon soon.

  8. Introducing Joanna Kleszcz-Czarnecka!

The lovely Joanna Kleszcz-Czarnecka, our only bilingual hairdresser, is originally from Poland and decided to pursue her dream career after moving to Edinburgh.

Based at Charlie Miller Ocean Terminal, Joanna joined the team in 2018 and here she describes her journey so far:

“Hairdressing has always fascinated me. My grandfather was a hairdresser and my mum’s best friend had a hair salon in where I spent a lot of time and observed her creative work. When I met my future husband it turned out that half of his family were hairdressers too and so I decided that this was a sign to take up education in this profession and fulfil my passion.”

“Fryzjerstwo fascynowało mnie od zawsze. Mój dziadek był fryzjerem, a najlepsza przyjaciółka mojej mamy miała salon fryzjerski, w którym spędzalam dużo czasu i obserwowałam jej pracę. Kiedy poznałam mojego przyszłego męża, okazało się, że połowa jego rodziny pracuje jako fryzjerzy, więc zdecydowałam, że jest to znak do podjęcia nauki w tym zawodzie i spełnienia mojej pasji.”

“When I graduated from University in Poland almost 15 years ago I decided to come to Edinburgh. After a few years of studying Art I finally gathered the confidence to start my dream of being a hairdresser. I studied hairdressing at Edinburgh College where I gained an HNC in Hairdressing with a Grade A. During my studies I worked in several Edinburgh salons, I also used to return to Poland during the holidays and study private hairdressing courses. I have also worked as a hairdresser in a care home which was very rewarding. I joined Charlie Miller team in Ocean Terminal in April 2018.”

“Kiedy ukończyłam Uniwersytet w Polsce prawie 15 lat temu postanowiłam przyjechać do Edynburga. Dołączyłam do zespołu Charliego Millera w Ocean Terminal w kwietniu 2018 roku.”

“My greatest passion is cutting and put ups, I love being a hairdresser. I really enjoy working in the salon – each day is different and never boring mainly thanks to the various client who come through the door. Outside of work my favourite things are art, music, films and spending time with my 8 year old son Casper.”

“Uwielbiam być fryzjerka, moją największą pasją jest strzyzenie i upiecia. Lubię pracować w salonie – każdy dzień jest inny i nigdy nudny, głównie dzięki różnym klientom, którzy nas odwiedzaja. Poza pracą moje hobby to sztuka, muzyka, filmy i spędzanie czasu z moim 8-letnim synem Casperem”.

  9. Graduation 2018

Our fabulous Charlie Miller stylists graduate in style and celebrate their hard work and achievements!

Charlie Miller staff from across the salons were invited to an evening of recognition to celebrate and applaud team members who had graduated from trainee to stylist.

A company first, the inaugural graduation ceremony was held at the King Khalid Auditorium in Edinburgh’s Surgeon’s Hall where all 5 salons came together along with invited guests to share in individual successes.

Proud family members and salon teams added to the atmosphere in the room as each Graduate Stylist was met with a huge round of cheer and applause when called upon to collect their certificate from their salon manager!

Before achieving Graduate Stylist status, trainees must complete and pass the highly-regarded 3-year Charlie Miller Training Programme in cutting and styling, colour and customer service. We believe this is something worth celebrating!

Our graduation evening had an amazing family feel with an exciting buzz” commented, Jason Miller, Joint Managing Director. “It was lovely to see how people have grown and developed in their craft and as individuals.  The graduation night provided a real sense of achievement for those stylists involved and we hope this will inspire others to have belief in what they can achieve. Hopefully we have created a further hunger for development and learning. There is excitement now and for others in the future”.

This year we have teamed up with Ocean Terminal shopping centre to celebrate the relationships we enjoy with our clients, depicted through an exhibition: My Stylist & Me’.

At Charlie Miller, we believe the relationship between clients and stylists is at the heart of our business. Moreover, each relationship is unique which became even more apparent through working on this real-life photo exhibition. Visit the exhibition, which runs until the end of January, and you can also enter our monthly competition to win a Cut & Colour.

    Behind the Scenes

Each participating stylist invited one of their clients to come into salon to take part in a photo shoot. Client’s had their hair styled and make-up applied for the photograph. To complete the project, clients and stylists answered questions about their relationship.

In the photographs, you get a feel for how much effort our team put in to making this a magical experience and an even better result!

We hope you love the exhibition as much as we do!

The exhibition is live until January 2019 and you can view the gallery by visiting Ocean Terminal shopping centre:

    CM_19 IMAGE-7 IMAGE-5 IMAGE-1
In 1990 Charlie Miller elevated hair photography to a work of art with a set of experimental images to celebrate the salon’s 25th Anniversary. This visionary limited edition Collector’s Portfolio featured seven dramatic styles, inspired by qualities such as strength and abundance, and was shot against specially commissioned backdrops featuring ancient runes. Top fashion photographer Nick Price captured the images.

Charlie’s aim in creating the unique collection was to challenge and extend the boundaries of hair photography. With only 50 sets designed and produced by Colin Marr, the beautifully presented portfolio was launched at a press breakfast in Joe’s Cafe in London, a popular venue for 1990s fashion industry movers and shakers.

  15. Client Stories: Chrissie Heughan & Hayley Wilson

In 1994 during her student years at Edinburgh College of Art Chrissie Heughan was a hair model at Stafford Street for the trainees of that time. She has been a client ever since and for the past 3 years Chrissie can be found sitting in the chair at the salon in Ocean Terminal being looked after by her stylist Hayley. What is it that professional artist Chrissie (mum to Outlander star Sam Heughan) and stylist Hayley enjoy about each appointment?

    CHRISSIE HEUGHAN

Being an artist is really a lifestyle yet means there’s not a lot of what one would call “spare time” and although I enjoy sport, cinema and the theatre there’s nothing more relaxing than a head massage at the salon. It’s my favourite think and chill time! I love that they don’t do fuss! Then it’s over to Hayley and the calm, careful and professional journey continues in her chair. She completely understands my hair and all its challenges and it’s always well cut, smooth and manageable.

    HAYLEY WILSON

I started blow drying Chrissie’s hair about 3 years ago when I was a trainee. She came in often for model blow dries and was always very patient and helpful when it came to discussing her challenging thick hair. Chrissie and I both know how much hair she has and it often seems that no matter how much I cut there’s always more; it’s never ending but Chrissie trusts me fully on all advice I give her on what’s best for her hair type. I’m delighted that after qualifying Chrissie followed me to my new salon Ocean Terminal and now comes to me as a full paying client for both colour and cutting services. I find Chrissie a very funny, friendly and interesting lady.

Appointments with Hayley, or any of our talented stylists across Charlie Miller’s five luxury Edinburgh salons, can be booked at the click of button with our online app and you can view our price list here. We look forward to welcoming you to the salon soon.

  16. We’re supporting The St John & the City Defibrillator Project

This week 17 defibrillators were installed on Edinburgh Trams as part of an ongoing project by the St John and the City Defibrillator Project to provide lifesaving devices throughout the City. Charlie Miller is delighted to be one of the first donor businesses to support this very worthy cause which also sees Edinburgh Trams as the first public transport organisation in the UK to have public access defibrillators (PADs) on all their fleet. Read the full story here http://bit.ly/2lRQ1gi

Use of a defibrillator within three to five minutes of a cardiac arrest can increase survival rates by up to 75 per cent. Each one comes with a recorded message to explain how to use them.

What is a defibrillator and when should it be used?

    • It is a device that gives a high energy electric shock to the heart through the chest wall and should be used when someone is in cardiac arrest.
    • A cardiac arrest is when the heart stops pumping blood around the body. If someone has suddenly collapsed, is not breathing normally and is unresponsive, they are in cardiac arrest.
    • Defibrillators are now commonplace in public areas such as train stations, shopping centres, airports and leisure centres.
    • These defibrillators are often known as public access defibrillators (PAD) as anyone can use them in an emergency.
    • The British Heart Foundation says that you should not be afraid to use a defibrillator if someone has had a cardiac arrest.
