It’s been 18 years since our last Stafford Street salon refit and a change was well overdue, so for that reason we welcomed the help of Scotland’s leading interior designer, Ian Smith Design & Architecture to modernise our Georgian townhouse salon.
The salon was transformed in just 5 weeks and is now a space of true luxury
Large porcelain tiles that, in appearance, resemble natural pale polished concrete, fill the floor and walls. Tall, bespoke mirrors are designed to sit off the walls, and a discreet LED light strip is placed behind the mirror to create a warm halo of light.
For our clients in a high-tech world, we also provide free Wi-Fi and charging worktops, which are built into every station.
At the back of the salon, we feature Maletti’s ‘Modern’ wash units designed by Philippe Starck. This provides a new level of luxury and high-end comfort, and they can be adjusted to suit each client’s personal preference.

Reducing Our Environmental Footprint: Scrummi Towels

At Charlie Miller, we strive to do right by our clients, and that includes protecting the environment at the same time. In all 5 salons, we use Scrummi towels – the ultimate sustainable solution to cotton towels.
How has Scrummi helped reduce our environmental footprint?
Since 2011 we have made a dramatic difference. Here’s what we’ve achieved so far:
- We’ve reduced 500 plus tonnes of CO2
- We’ve saved 8.3 million litres of chemically contaminated water
What are Scrummi towels?
Scrummi is a single-use, 100% biodegradable vegan towel that is made from soft and natural wood fibres from sustainable forestry programs. This means it not only protects our environment, but it’s also free of germs and fresh every time!
How do they differ from cotton towels?
No matter how hard you wash a cotton towel (and no matter how much energy you use) germs will remain. They’re invisible to the naked eye, but trust us when we say that lots of fungal and bacterial pathogens are waiting, just below the over-washed scratchy surface, ready to be unleashed onto the next client. But not at Charlie Miller! Scrummi towels are 100% germ and scratch-free. We don’t blame you if you never want to go near a cotton towel again…
How does this help?
Typical salon towels use literally thousands of kw/h of electricity to wash them after each use. This process equals lots of CO2 which adds to the impact of global warming…but wait, there’s more. An average washing machine load of synthetic towels equals 700,000 micro-plastics and harmful detergents and toxins which have a devastating impact on our oceans.

Building a relationship with our clients is just as important as learning the skills it takes to become a hairdresser. After all, a good stylist can last a lifetime for a client and at Charlie Miller, we strive to make sure our stylists do exactly that.
Two salon stylists, Joanna Drummond and Casey Thomson, have been with Charlie Miller for just over 5 years. During their time here, they’ve built strong relationships with every one of their clients, helping them to achieve a look which is right for them.

When Joanna met Joanna!
Joanna Goddard on her stylist, Joanna:

The glamour of Charlie Miller graced Edinburgh this week at our annual Achievement Awards ceremony.
This year, the 19th Charlie Miller Awards, were held at the Kimpton Hotel on Charlotte Square where guests enjoyed delicious food and excellent hospitality. Attending the event with 100+ staff and management were our founders Charlie & Janet Miller along with guests from Kérastase, L’Oréal and We Are Hair & Beauty.
In addition to the celebrations, the night was all about having fun! Games such as Play Your Cards Right and Hit or Miss were woven throughout the ceremony and played by all attendees. Staff also participated in tombola comprising of wonderful gifts from local Edinburgh businesses such as:

As expected, the trends vary from one awards show to the next. The BAFTA attendees sported sleek looks compared to those at the Grammy’s where volume was in vogue for the night proving, as always, the red carpet is unpredictable yet never disappoints.

Alex about Emily:
‘My favourite thing about having my hair done by Emily is walking out of the door feeling like a new man (and the mid-wash head massage is a pleasure). Emily always knows how to tailor my haircut with her expertise, judgement and imagination. She is a confident and imaginative professional. Creating a look that fits my personal style is no problem for her. I think of David Beckham as my own personal style icon but also everybody else’s.
New experiences and challenges inspire me and Emily manages to create a look that’s just right to take on anything!‘

Emily says; ‘Alex is such a full of life character that I always look forward to him coming in. He has such a genuine personality which makes him a very easy person to get along with and lovely to chat to. He’s always got great stories about his travels and everywhere he has been. I have been cutting his hair for graduation and family photos and before many of his trips. Because of his adventurous spirit, he’s very open to change with his hair and is always looking for suggestions on what I think would work best with his hair. He is quite laid back and most of the time lets me do what I think is best. Cutting Alex’s hair is always refreshing.’

#ThrowBackThursday – 1990 Collector’s Portfolio

In 1990 Charlie Miller elevated hair photography to a work of art with a set of experimental images to celebrate the salon’s 25th Anniversary. This visionary limited edition Collector’s Portfolio featured seven dramatic styles, inspired by qualities such as strength and abundance, and was shot against specially commissioned backdrops featuring ancient runes. Top fashion photographer Nick Price captured the images.
Charlie’s aim in creating the unique collection was to challenge and extend the boundaries of hair photography. With only 50 sets designed and produced by Colin Marr, the beautifully presented portfolio was launched at a press breakfast in Joe’s Cafe in London, a popular venue for 1990s fashion industry movers and shakers.

Client Stories: Chrissie Heughan & Hayley Wilson

In 1994 during her student years at Edinburgh College of Art Chrissie Heughan was a hair model at Stafford Street for the trainees of that time. She has been a client ever since and for the past 3 years Chrissie can be found sitting in the chair at the salon in Ocean Terminal being looked after by her stylist Hayley. What is it that professional artist Chrissie (mum to Outlander star Sam Heughan) and stylist Hayley enjoy about each appointment?
CHRISSIE HEUGHAN
Being an artist is really a lifestyle yet means there’s not a lot of what one would call “spare time” and although I enjoy sport, cinema and the theatre there’s nothing more relaxing than a head massage at the salon. It’s my favourite think and chill time! I love that they don’t do fuss! Then it’s over to Hayley and the calm, careful and professional journey continues in her chair. She completely understands my hair and all its challenges and it’s always well cut, smooth and manageable.
HAYLEY WILSON
I started blow drying Chrissie’s hair about 3 years ago when I was a trainee. She came in often for model blow dries and was always very patient and helpful when it came to discussing her challenging thick hair. Chrissie and I both know how much hair she has and it often seems that no matter how much I cut there’s always more; it’s never ending but Chrissie trusts me fully on all advice I give her on what’s best for her hair type. I’m delighted that after qualifying Chrissie followed me to my new salon Ocean Terminal and now comes to me as a full paying client for both colour and cutting services. I find Chrissie a very funny, friendly and interesting lady.

Sophie Tulloch
‘I used to get my hair cut in London but I had this fringe that was driving me crazy so I walked into Stafford Street and got an appointment with India. She’d just become engaged to Jason and was starting out in her career. I thought she was one of the nicest people I’d met and she completely got what I needed.
We’ve tried different hairstyles over the years. I trust her implicitly. She’s professional and friendly and I always feel very welcome. I’ve been to different Charlie Miller salons with her over the years. If India moves…..I follow.’
India Miller
‘Sophie has been a really easy person to get to know as a client. We immediately clicked from the very first appointment. We have a comfy, flexible relationship. In a way we’ve grown up together. We’ve gone through the birth and parenting of our children together and now there’s an unspoken friendship and care for each other.
Sophie’s very natural and open, and incredibly honest and caring. She’s very relaxed about her hair. We always have a good giggle whenever she comes in to the salon. How best to describe Sophie? She’s like a lovely hug.’

HRH The Princess Royal

We were delighted and honoured to welcome HRH The Princess Royal on a visit to our salon and Training Academy at Holy Corner where she unveiled a plaque to commemorate our 50 years in business. The Princess Royal spent an hour meeting with Directors, Managers, Assistant Managers and over 40 other team members. These were from across the salons as well as a number of our longest-serving clients.
During a reception HRH learned about our work with the ‘Hair 4 U’ project and Teenage Cancer Trust (TCT). She met with patients and nurses involved. She also met our 6 ‘Trainees of the Year’. These are hairdresser from our successful apprenticeship programme. They were able to demonstrate some of their cutting, colouring and styling skills.
HRH finished her visit with a charitable donation to her Charities Trust along with a posy of flowers.

We’re supporting The St John & the City Defibrillator Project

This week 17 defibrillators were installed on Edinburgh Trams as part of an ongoing project by the St John and the City Defibrillator Project to provide lifesaving devices throughout the City. Charlie Miller is delighted to be one of the first donor businesses to support this very worthy cause which also sees Edinburgh Trams as the first public transport organisation in the UK to have public access defibrillators (PADs) on all their fleet. Use of a defibrillator within three to five minutes of a cardiac arrest can increase survival rates by up to 75 per cent. Each one comes with a recorded message to explain how to use them.
What is a defibrillator and when should it be used?
- It is a device that gives a high energy electric shock to the heart through the chest wall and should be used when someone is in cardiac arrest.
- A cardiac arrest is when the heart stops pumping blood around the body. If someone has suddenly collapsed, is not breathing normally and is unresponsive, they are in cardiac arrest.
- Defibrillators are now commonplace in public areas such as train stations, shopping centres, airports and leisure centres.
- These defibrillators are often known as public access defibrillators (PAD) as anyone can use them in an emergency.
- The British Heart Foundation says that you should not be afraid to use a defibrillator if someone has had a cardiac arrest.

Our latest ‘Client Stories’ interview features Jason Miller, Joint Managing Director and one of his first ever clients Clare Meredith, whose relationship began almost 32 years ago when Clare first visited Charlie Miller’s Stafford Street Salon. Let us introduce you.
Meet Clare Meredith and Jason Miller;
Clare says;
‘I had young children at the time, so having my hair cut was a bit of a luxury. The fact that Jason was a junior stylist back then was a bonus. He always makes me feel comfortable. Everyone’s like that in the salon. It’s very inclusive and non-judgmental. Jason’s a wonderful people person and wise beyond his years.
I love the fact that I get more than a haircut when I visit. I get a view on life and the universe. He influences me in all sorts of ways. He gave me the confidence not to colour my hair.’
Jason says;
‘Clare must have come in during my first week as a stylist. She restores paintings and has won top awards in her field, so we always have really interesting conversations. When I plucked up the courage to tell her I paint she gave me an amazing book about pigment and how artists make paint. She was so encouraging as I was starting to dabble, which epitomises her kindness and interest in others. She has recommended me to friends and colleagues and they all adore her too. Charlie Miller’s Coolest Client – North Pole Adventures for Teenage Cancer Trust

This month’s Throw Back Thursday is inspired by the change of season and the definite chill in the air. In 2010 Sir Tom Farmer invited his friend Charlie Miller on his expedition to the North Pole and officially became the company’s coolest client when Charlie cut his hair for the Teenage Cancer Trust. Interviewed by the BBC about the trip Charlie said ‘”I was cutting Sir Tom’s hair and he asked me if I would go, I looked at him for three seconds and the boy in me appeared and I said ‘yeah’.
Once at the Pole Charlie kept his gloves on to avoid frostbite. Sir Tom removed his hat to brave the severe conditions and was given a super fast trim in temperatures of minus 35 degrees. The haircut was a world’s first and the adventurous trip raised significant funds for a very worthy cause.
2010 was also the year that Charlie Miller opened it’s fifth salon at Holy Corner, realising its dream of launching a training academy for industry peers. Led by salon manager Amber Swift, you’re guaranteed a warm welcome when you step inside this winter. Book online today.

Senior stylist Hayley Dallas instantly thought of Madina Kenzhalieva when invited to interview a client for this feature. The glamorous duo bonded during Madina’s visits to Charlie Miller South St Andrew Street and share a passion for their careers, Edinburgh’s trendy bars and restaurants and style. Meet Madina Kenzhalieva and Hayley Dallas
‘I discovered Charlie Miller via the L’Oreal Professional website and choosing Hayley as my stylist was a smart decision. Hayley is professional, funny and has become a friend during my regular visits to the salon. We enjoy a good giggle, talking about everything from my interest in classical literature to style icon Gigi Hadid’s workouts and makeup. We enjoy sharing what’s happening in our lives. Hayley understands how I like to wear my hair – big and bouncy most of the time – and that having fabulous hair brings me even more confidence.’

Access All Areas – MTV Europe Music Awards

This month’s Throw Back Thursday flashes back to the 2014 MTV Europe Music Awards. For once Jason, India and their team of stylists (Cat Nicholson, Tammy Waugh, Amber Lennie, Lynsey Wilson, Natalie Cole and Stephen Suckling) didn’t require passports to travel to look after the artists and presenters as the prestigious awards ceremony was held here in Scotland, in the city of Glasgow.

Helping celebrities get ready for their close up is all in a day’s work for the Charlie Miller team and 2014 marked the twelfth consecutive year of being appointed official hair stylists at the MTV Europe Music Awards. While the glitz, glamour and excitement reached a crescendo in the auditorium, our team were busy backstage, working their magic on hundreds of stars, presenters and performers and adding last minute finishing touches before they stepped into the spotlight. With everyone from A-list artists to troupes of backing dancers to look after against a ticking clock, the pace and turnaround is relentlessly fast, especially during the show.
There’s no denying that looking after musicians and movie stars can be an exciting experience but we have just as much fun, at a more leisurely pace, in the salon looking after our clients. Music and fashions may change over the years but a good haircut never goes out of style.

Styling Sex in the City’s Kim Cattrall for Edinburgh International Film Festival

As always, team Charlie Miller were on hand to look after some of the stars which so far have included ‘Sex and the City’ star, Kim Cattrall and British actress, producer and fashion designer, Sadie Frost (below).
Congratulations to Edinburgh International Film Festival on last night’s successful Opening Night Gala at its landmark 70th edition with the world premiere showing of Tommy’s Honours.
The teams are looking forward to a busy time over the next couple of weeks in this exciting world of cinema.
Described by film critic Mark Kermode as “like Cannes – only civilised”, the film festival is screening quality films with original ideas, including many national and international premières until 26th June. Plan your visit and book your tickets here
